April — Peak Spawn

April is arguably the best all-around fishing month on Lake Norfork. Crappie spawn shallow, bass spawn in the bays, white bass continue their run, and the weather is finally tolerable. Most species are catchable from shore.

What's biting in April

Crappie spawn shallow. When water hits 62°F, crappie pile into shallow brush in the backs of coves. Pigeon Creek and Float Creek arms are tradition destinations. Live minnows or 1/16oz jigs around any cover.

Bass on beds. Largemouth bass spawn in protected coves in 2-6 feet of water. Sight-fishing opportunities abound. Soft plastics, jigs, and lipless crankbaits all produce.

Striper following shad. Big stripers follow spawning shad into the upper lake creek arms. Live shad fished on planer boards is the local technique.

White bass still running. White bass runs typically peak in early-to-mid April and taper off as water warms. Late-April topwater action on schooling whites is legendary.

Chuck’s tip

If I had to recommend one week of the year to a first-time visitor, it's the last week of April. Pick almost any species, almost anywhere on the lake, and you can have a good day. The weather is right too — cool mornings, warm afternoons.

Plan your April trip

Lake Norfork in April rewards anglers who match conditions to species. Use the live Lake Report the morning of your trip to see current temps and generation. Cross-reference with your target species page to confirm tactics.

Most April guests stay 3-5 days, which gives weather windows time to align. Our seven cabins sit on a quiet cove with private dock access — cast right from the dock at first light, or run anywhere on the lake in minutes.
