The Norfork River below Norfork Dam is one of the finest trout fisheries in the United States. Cold dam-release water creates ideal year-round conditions for rainbow and brown trout. Both species thrive. The fishery is regularly stocked, has wild reproduction, and produces trophy browns over 20 pounds.
Rainbow trout are stocked heavily and provide the consistent everyday catch. Many fish run 10-16 inches with the occasional 20+ inch holdover. Brown trout are stocked less frequently but grow larger; they're the trophy species. Browns over 10 pounds are caught annually, and the river holds the state record (over 38 pounds, taken in 1988).
When the dam isn't generating, the river is wadable in many sections. Low-water windows are gold for fly fishers and bank anglers. When the dam is generating, the river becomes a fast-flowing tailwater that requires a drift boat, kayak, or careful float for safe fishing. Check the generation schedule before you go — conditions change hour to hour.
Fly fishing: Small midges (#18-22) under indicators, San Juan worms, egg patterns, sculpin streamers. Spin fishing: Small inline spinners, jigs tipped with PowerBait, small spoons. Bait fishing: PowerBait, salmon eggs, night crawlers on light line. Most productive sections are within 5 miles of the dam.
Tailwater trout fishing is good year-round but several windows stand out: late fall (October-December) for big browns, winter (January-March) for solitude and great conditions, and spring (April-May) for variety. Summer is fine but you'll share the river with more recreational floaters.
Check generation before you go — not when you get there. The river goes from wadable to dangerous in minutes when they fire up the turbines. If you hear a horn or notice the water rising fast, get out of the water immediately and move up the bank. Generation kills people on this river every couple of years.
The best trout trips on Lake Norfork align timing with the seasonal patterns above. Cross-reference with the live Lake Report for current conditions. Most multi-day visits give you the weather windows you need to put fish in the boat.
Our seven cabins sit on a private cove with dock access — convenient if you're running the lake daily, and especially nice for fishing the tailwater day-trips. Browse cabins or get in touch to plan around your target species.
