February — Pre-Spawn Begins

Late February is the inflection point. Cold-water patterns still hold, but the first hints of pre-spawn movement begin. Walleye lead the change.

What's biting in February

Walleye start moving shallow. As water temps creep into the high 40s, walleye begin staging on points and creek channel breaks ahead of the spawn. Jigs tipped with minnows produce in 15-25 feet.

Striper in transition. Some stripers stay deep but others follow shad up into the upper-lake creek arms. Trolling umbrella rigs or live shad covers water effectively.

Crappie on the move. Schools begin pushing toward spring spawning areas but stay in deeper brush 15-25 feet. Slow presentations still rule.

Tailwater still strong. Trout fishing remains excellent. Spawning rainbows in the upper tailwater create exciting sight-fishing opportunities.

Chuck’s tip

Watch the water temperature like a hawk in late February. When it nudges above 48°F in the creek arms, the white bass run is about to fire off — and you want to be on the water for that.
