Peak month: November · Also strong: April
Walleye are stocked successfully on Lake Norfork and the population has grown into a legitimate trophy fishery. Most anglers come here for stripers and never realize the walleye potential. The state has produced multiple walleye over 12 pounds from this lake, and fish in the 5-8 pound range are caught every season.
Spring (March-May): Pre-spawn and spawn on rocky main-lake points and humps. Best months for trophy walleye. Summer (June-August): Deep on humps and points (25-40 feet), or shallow at night. Fall (September-November): Outstanding fishing. Walleye load up before winter on rocky points in 12-25 feet. Peak month: November. Winter (December-February): Deep humps, slow presentations, big fish.
Rocky main-lake points. Humps. Channel-edge structure. Cranfield Point area, the rocky points south of Robinson Point, and main-channel humps near the dam all produce. Walleye are structure-oriented and rarely far from rocks or wood.
Trolling crankbaits (deep-diving Reef Runners, Husky Jerks) at 1.5-2.5 mph along contour lines. Jigging: 1/4-1/2oz jigs tipped with night crawlers, minnows, or leeches. Crawler harnesses on bottom bouncers in summer. Blade baits in cold water.
In summer, walleye come shallow at night to feed on points. A slow-trolled crankbait or a bobber-rigged leech off a lighted point can produce excellent fish. One of the great underrated summer experiences on this lake.
Walleye are subtle. They don't hit like a striper. Watch your rod tip for any tick or pause. If you feel anything at all, set the hook. People miss more walleye than they hook because the bite is so soft.
