Lake Norfork Striped Bass Fishing

Peak month: October · Also strong: May

Why Lake Norfork is famous for stripers

Lake Norfork has been stocked with striped bass for decades and the lake holds them in remarkable size and number. It has produced state-record fish and routinely gives up 30-40 pound stripers, especially in October and November. The combination of cool, deep water and abundant shad creates ideal striper habitat year-round.

Seasonal patterns

Spring (April-May): Stripers follow spawning shad up into creek arms and the upper lake. Topwater action peaks at dawn. Summer (June-August): Fish go deep to find 65-72°F water, often 40-70 feet down. Schooling action in early morning. Fall (September-November): Best fishing of the year. Big fish, large schools, active feeding. Winter (December-March): Deep and slow, but trophy potential remains.

Where to find them

Main-lake structure: humps, channel swings, points. In summer they hold deep over baitfish. In spring and fall they follow shad into the upper lake creek arms (Float Creek, Pigeon Creek, Big Creek). The Henderson area and main channel south of Cranfield Point are reliable summer trolling waters. Watch for diving gulls year-round — gulls find stripers before you do.

Tackle and techniques

Live bait: Live shad on planer boards, free-line, or downlines is the most reliable technique. Trolling: Umbrella rigs or large crankbaits in summer. Topwater: Spook, Redfin, pencil poppers at dawn and dusk in spring and fall. Vertical jigging: Big spoons over deep schools in summer and winter. Use heavy gear — 30-40 pound fish are common and they pull hard.

A note on hybrids

Lake Norfork also has hybrid striped bass — a cross between striped and white bass. Hybrids fight harder pound-for-pound and often school with pure stripers. They're typically smaller (3-10 pounds) but exceptionally aggressive. Same baits and locations work for both.

Chuck’s tip

If you're here for one striper trip in your life, do October and bring heavy line. Forty-pound test minimum. The fish of a lifetime is here in October and you'll regret it if you under-gear. Use circle hooks with live bait so you don't gut-hook releases.

Plan a trip around striped bass

The best striped bass trips on Lake Norfork align timing with the seasonal patterns above. Cross-reference with the live Lake Report for current conditions. Most multi-day visits give you the weather windows you need to put fish in the boat.

Our seven cabins sit on a private cove with dock access — convenient if you're running the lake daily, and especially nice for fishing the tailwater day-trips. Browse cabins or get in touch to plan around your target species.
