Smallmouth on Lake Norfork

Smallmouth are not the dominant bass species on Lake Norfork the way they are on some of the river-system Ozark lakes, but they're here in good numbers, particularly in the upper lake and around rocky structure. Pound-for-pound they fight harder than any other species in the lake.

Where to find them

Rocky structure. Bluffs, rocky points, gravel banks, chunk rock. The upper sections of the lake (above Henderson) and the rocky bluff areas around the dam tend to hold more smallies than the lower, brushier sections. Steep banks with broken rock at the base are classic.

Seasonal patterns

Spring (March-May): Pre-spawn fish stage on rocky points in 8-15 feet, then move shallower to spawn on gravel in 4-8 feet. Summer (June-August): Deeper, often 15-25 feet on rocky main-lake points. Early-morning topwater can be excellent. Fall (September-November): Aggressive feeding on shad and crawfish. Winter (December-February): Deep and slow, often suspended over rocky structure.

Tackle and techniques

Crawfish patterns: tubes, craw plastics, jigs in 1/4-3/8oz. Jerkbaits in pre-spawn and post-spawn. Drop shot with a goby or shiner imitation in summer. Topwater (small walking baits, poppers) on summer mornings around rocky points. Light line (8-10lb fluoro) helps in the clear water.

Size expectations

Most Norfork smallies run 1-3 pounds. Fish in the 4-pound class are not uncommon. The occasional 5+ pounder is caught, mostly in the spring on rocky points. They're scrappy at any size.

Chuck’s tip

In summer, the first hour after sunrise on a rocky main-lake point is your best shot at a quality smallmouth. Walk a small Spook over the rocks. They'll absolutely crush it. Have a follow-up rod with a drop shot ready for fish that boil but don't commit.
