October — Trophy Striper

October is the month every Lake Norfork striper angler circles on the calendar. The biggest fish of the year come out as water cools into the 60s. Schools are massive. Trophy fish over 30 pounds are common, 40+ pound fish are caught every year.

What's biting in October

Trophy striper time. Big stripers feed heavily on shad as water cools. Live bait still works but big swimbaits, jerkbaits, and umbrella rigs come into their own. Look for shad schools and stripers won't be far.

Schooling action peaks. Surface schooling is consistent throughout October. Dawn and dusk windows are most reliable, but action can happen midday too.

Walleye on rocky points. Fall walleye fishing is excellent. Rocky main-lake points and humps in 12-25 feet. Crankbaits, jigs, and live minnows.

Bass feeding hard. Largemouth pack on weight for winter. Crankbaits, jerkbaits, and topwater all produce. Steep main-lake banks and creek channel swings.

Chuck’s tip

If you can only fish Lake Norfork one week a year and you want a shot at a wall-hanger striper, come the last week of October. Bring heavy gear. We see 40-pound fish landed somewhere on the lake almost every year in this window.

Most October guests stay 3-5 days, which gives weather windows time to align. Our seven cabins sit on a quiet cove with private dock access — cast right from the dock at first light, or run anywhere on the lake in minutes.
